About

Bryant | Liou is a partnership founded on the belief that thoughtful design and strategic planning are essential to the realization of a collective vision. We provide guidance to community-minded institutions seeking to enhance their public mission through capital projects and planning. Our practice maintains a focus on understanding the needs of the client, the end user, the community, and the unique opportunities inherent in every project.

The firm builds upon the experience of its two principals, who each have more than two decades of experience in the design and construction industries, providing architectural, programming, and planning services, strategic analysis, project management, and Owner's representation to non-profit, institutional, commercial, and residential clients.

William Bryant, AIA

Throughout his professional career, William Bryant has developed a deep understanding of and appreciation for each phase of project design, from concept development, feasibility, budgeting and programming through design development and construction. He has over 30 years of experience in and around the construction industry.

Prior to founding Bryant | Liou, William oversaw the development of several public and private sector projects in the New York City metropolitan area as project architect and manager with Sage and Coombe Architects. Projects included Poly Prep Country Day School, Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, Riverside Park South, Kosciusko Pool and Recreation Center, and St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, a master plan and feasibility study completed in collaboration with U3 Advisors.

Earlier in his career, William worked for a number of accomplished architectural firms in New York, Boston and San Francisco, and was managing partner of The Rose and Gugghenheimer Studio in New York and ETAL Studio in Massachusetts. William’s design work spans a range of project types including educational buildings and campuses, community libraries, commercial restaurants, retail, museums, research and development facilities, housing, and private residences.

William received a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from North Carolina State University. He is licensed to practice architecture in New York.

Joanne Liou, AIA

Joanne's professional career has been a natural extension of her design philosophy, which sees architecture as an enabler of mission and not simply an expression of form. She has over 25 years of experience in architectural design, programming, management, and Owner advocacy.

Prior to founding Bryant | Liou, Joanne worked closely with owners in the non-profit community to plan, manage and implement ambitious capital projects that remain true to their institutional missions and program aspirations.  She has represented the owner’s interests on significant cultural projects in New York, including BRIC Arts | Media House, an expanded venue for free and low-cost cultural programming in Brooklyn completed in 2013, and The Shed in Hudson Yards, on which she worked with Levien & Company as Owner’s representative, project manager, and project consultant through its completion in 2019.

Joanne spent her early career working for a number of accomplished architectural firms in New York and San Francisco. Her design work focused primarily on projects for non-profit institutional clients and developers, including buildings for the arts and education, mixed-use and affordable housing, community libraries, offices and social services.

Joanne received a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Engineering from Princeton University.  She is licensed to practice architecture in New York.
